Which features use AI?

One: text-to-speech. Mirai-chan uses the open-source VieNeu-TTS v3 Turbo voice model, running on a server operated by Mirai-chan in AWS Tokyo. Mirai-chan does not use large language models (chatbots) and currently does not translate, summarize, rewrite or answer questions. Article detection is a conventional algorithm running in your browser, not AI.

What is sent, and why?

The text of the article or your selection, split into short chunks, so the model can generate speech, sent only when you press Play; a random install ID and anonymous token, for the free quota; and your IP address (part of every network connection), for abuse prevention, stored only as a hash. Content goes from the extension to the Mirai-chan API (Cloudflare) and on to the speech server (AWS). No third-party AI provider receives your content, and it is not used to train models. The text is not stored after the audio is generated; audio is cached by hash so it does not need to be generated again. Details: privacy policy.

How the voice is produced

The extension extracts the article in your browser and splits it into short chunks. When you press Play, the first chunk is sent; the server normalizes the text (numbers, dates, abbreviations), the model generates audio, and it streams back as soon as the first seconds exist. Later chunks are prepared while you listen. Mirai-chan has one voice: a synthetic voice created from the recording of one person who consented to this. It uses no other preset voices and does not imitate anyone else. The name “Mirai-chan” is pronounced “mi rai chằn”.

Accuracy and limitations

It may mispronounce names, foreign words, abbreviations, numbers or symbols; intonation and pauses are sometimes unnatural; article detection can miss passages or include unrelated parts (captions, ads) on unusual layouts; Mirai-chan reads exactly what is on the page and does not fact-check it. For anything important, check the original.

Your controls

On first use Mirai-chan asks for your consent before sending content for speech generation. Nothing is sent until you press Play, even on sites with automatic detection enabled. You can turn off automatic detection, clear your library and cached audio in Settings, or uninstall the extension.
